1/16/1989Prem Nazir, famous actor of more than 620 Malayalam films, died at the age of 59 yrs.
1/24/1924Karpoori Thakur ""Jan Nayak"", freedom fighter, teacher and national president of Samyukta Socialist Party, was born in village Samastipur, District Bihar.
9/13/1901Jamshedji Bomanji H. Wadia, director and producer, was born. His first film was 'Toofan Mail' (1932).
6/7/1984Indian Army troops, sent to Punjab to quell Sikh violence, stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest of Sikh shrines. More than 400 persons were reported killed in the assault at the shrine, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
7/23/1993Indian National Satellite (INSAT-2B), second satellite in the INSAT-2 series, was launched. This is more operational multi-purpose communication and enhanced meteorology satellite. It is still in service. It was aunched by European Ariane launch vehicle.
3/24/1977Morarji Desai elected leader of Janata Party and sworn in as the Prime Minister of India at New Delhi. Later he formed his cabinet. He was in the office of Prime Minister till July 28, 1979. This was first non-Congress Government in India.
