10/31/1885St. Stephen's Hospital was opened. It was the first hospital for women and children at Delhi.
9/13/1893Mama Parmanand, one of the founders of 'Prarthana Samaj', passed away.
8/7/1925Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was born in Kumbakonam. He went to Britain and took his Ph.D from the school of Agriculture in Cambridge in 1952. He developed high yielding strains of wheat and rice and accomplished difficult crosses in potato and jute species. In 1971, he was awarded The Ramon Magsaysay Award for generating a new confidence in the agricultural capabilities of the country. He was the Director of the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines. He is also the first agriculture scientist to win the Albert Einstein world science Award in 1986.

12/19/2000Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev, was born on Baisakhi in a Khatri family in Talwandi Rae Bhoe in Pakistan, known as Nankana Sahib. Guru Nanak's birthday has been traditionally celebrated on Katik Poornamashi. Althought the correct birth date has been established as Vaisakh 1 (April 14), it will continue to be celebrated on Katik Poornamashi until such time as it is changed to Vaisakh 1. (Most Sikhs in the present day consider themselves members of a separate religion.).
10/14/1930The Flag of Freedom' or 'Swaraj Toran' a feature film produced by Prabhat Film Co.Kolhapur was prohibited by the Censor Board on October 14, 1930 on the grounds that it was objectionable in the existing political situation. The film, however, was cleared only after deleting certain portions and the title changed to 'Udaykal'.
