8/25/1959Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister, declares in New Delhi that India will defend Bhutan and Sikkim if attacked by China.
10/31/1984Indira Gandhi, India's four-time prime minister, was gunned down by two members of her personal security guard as she walked from her home to her office in New Delhi. She died after four hours of emergency surgery. The only daughter of former Prime Minister Nehru was 66. Both of her attackers were identified as members of the Sikh religion. One was shot dead. The other was captured. Sikh extremists had threatened to kill Ms. Gandhi since she ordered the raid on their shrine in Amritsar. She had told an interviewer that she was not intimidated by the threats. 'I am not afraid,' she said. 'I am frequently attacked.'

5/19/1993Mughal conqueror Babur Shah (1483-1530) defeats Ibrahim Lodi II, the Lodi Sultan of Delhi, and captures Delhi and the Koh-i-noor diamond, in the First Battle of Panipat. He founded the Mughal dynasty in India (1526-1761), consolidated by his grandson Akbar.

4/15/1946The Kangla Tongbi war memorial built for 221 members Advance Base Depot, who laid down their lives to repulse several waves of Japanese attacks, was erected near a village named Kangla Tongbi at Mile 8 on the Imphal - Dimapur road. It was originally erected from local stone and the main epitaph displayed above is of black Naga stone.
