Historical Event on 6/3/1947

British Government issued the partition plan, which was worked out by Lord Louis Mountbatten in New Delhi and was accepted by both Muslim League and Congress. The salient features of the partition were, 1) Provices of Bengal and Punjab to be divided., 2) The Indians will form the constitution of India and it will only be applicable in the areas where people accept it., 3) The province of Baluchistan shall adopt proper ways to decide its future., 4) 562 Princely States shall be free to decide their own future., 5) Referendum shall be held in N.W.F.P. and Assam., 6) The Governor General of both countries shall be the executive head of their respective countries., 7) Military assets shall be divided between the two countries and 8) Red Cliff Mission was setup, to demarcate the boundaries of the two countries. India would become free on 15th August 1947.

8/30/1979Earl Louis Mountbatten of Burma, a World War II hero, last British Viceroy in India and the first Governor General of independent India, was killed when Irish terrorists exploded his family fishing boat off the coast of Ireland. The Provisional wing of the Irish Republican Army immediately took credit for the killing, which it described as 'an execution' designed to further 'the noble struggle to drive the British intruders out of our native land'.

8/9/1942The Congress at its Bombay session passed the famous Quit India resolution, calling for mass struggle on non-violent lines on the widest possible scale, under the leadership of Gandhiji. He stressed that ""We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery""; popularly known as ""Do or Die"". But before the Congress could start the movement, the government arrested all the major leaders and the Congress was declared illegal. Spontaneous popular revolts broke out with the battle cry of 'British Quit India'.
